Tracking Covid-19 vaccinations worldwide

Last updated: April 19, 2021 at 3:49 p.m. ET

At least 181 countries and territories have administered more than 904 million doses of a Covid-19 vaccine, barely a year after the first Covid-19 case was reported in China. Several different vaccines have been developed at record speed, in large part due to years of research on related viruses and billions of dollars in investment.

In December 2020, the first dose of a fully tested vaccine — manufactured by Pfizer/BioNTech — was administered in the United Kingdom. Now, multiple vaccines have been authorized for use around the world and dozens of countries and territories have joined the race to vaccinate their residents.

Rate of global vaccination campaign

Currently, the global 7-day moving average of administered doses is about 16.2 million per day.

The vaccine rollout strategy varies from country to country. Some have favored vaccinating as many people as possible as quickly as possible, while others have tried to prioritize vaccinating specific vulnerable groups.

Leaders at the World Health Organization have emphasized the need for international cooperation in vaccination campaigns, noting that a global pandemic requires global efforts to end it.

Comparing vaccination rates

At least 181 countries and territories have started their vaccination rollouts. Different countries have different processes for approving vaccines, and not all countries have deals to obtain doses from manufacturers yet. As a result, countries and territories are at different stages of their vaccination campaigns.

Measuring countries’ progress is challenging because many are using vaccines that require two doses. Inconsistent data makes it hard to know how many people have been fully or only partially immunized.

The race to get fully vaccinated

Most countries and territories are using vaccines that require two doses to provide the greatest protection. Measuring countries’ progress is difficult, because reported data varies from country to country. Many report only the number of doses administered, but at least 105 break down how many people have received one or two doses.

About the data

Vaccination data on this page comes from Our World in Data (OWID), a data research website published by the Global Change Data Lab, an English charity based at the University of Oxford’s Martin Programme on Global Development. OWID collects its data from official sources, such as national and subnational government and public health agencies. OWID’s raw data and more detailed information about its sources is available on its GitHub repository.

Since different countries began their vaccination campaigns at different times, CNN reporters researched the date on which each country administered its first Covid-19 vaccine to determine how long each country has been vaccinating and ensure fairer comparisons. Wherever possible, reporters collected this information from government sources.

Because several of the current Covid-19 vaccines require a two-dose regimen to be considered fully effective, the number of vaccine doses administered does not necessarily equal the number of people who have been fully vaccinated. Except where otherwise noted, the data on this page refers to doses administered, not people vaccinated
